Christmas ride

Went for a ride with Seth on Christmas day. It was a cold snowy day...

This picture is the Monterey Bay from Wilder Ranch. The city of Santa Cruz would be just out of the photo to the left, and Monterey is across the bay in the distance. Long Marine Lab is down there on the left. Okay, so it's not really snowy. But it was cold (not cold like Uncle Dan's cold, but cold for what the picture looks like anyway) and as the sun started to get lower, it was definitely time to get somewhere warm.

After the ride, we had dinner at the Santa Cruz Diner (oh we were so happy it was open!). Had to get back home before it was completely dark. Just barely made it... this is about what it looked like.

A good end to the day.

Another Storm Surf Pic

Here's another picture of some cool stormy surf.

I swear, I could just sit and stare at stormy surf all day. This was between Santa Cruz and Davenport one afternoon. A pretty big swell, and a lot of wind. Cool.

Another Pic o' the Day

A stormy day today. Winds were howlin' 25-30kts, and swell was upward of 10+ ft.

Just outside my office...
The problem, of course, with pictures of storms and surf, is that they just really don't do the reality justice. You can't feel the wind or the spray from the surf. You can't hear the howling of the, and the thunder of the waves. But just try to imagine it...

Photo du Jour

Did a little over night camp trip last month (or so).

And this is what Rex looked like for the trip. He just looks like this is what he was made to do.

Which, of course, he was.

Today's Picture

Took this picture while on a mountain bike ride (you can see my bike there in the background). Actually, I first saw them the night before when I was out on a night ride with Seth... we came around a bend in the trail, and there was this really bright white patch illuminated in my headlight. Amazing how much they stood out at night when everything else was so dark. The next day I just happened to be on the same trail, and I did have my camera, so I took the picture.

Pic of the Day

Lynne bought a new bike... squishy on both ends! What really sucks is that she bought it last Sunday. Right after we finished a mountain bike ride. And then she had to jump on a boat for a week, so....... she hasn't ... even ... had ... a ... chance ... to ... ride ... it ... yet! Oh my god. She's back from sea tonight, but has to work tomorrow, so it may be another week until she gets to take it out. (Though, I think I feel a cough coming on, and I may be too sick to go to work one day this week. Cough cough.)

Ohio Addendum

I talked to Jane and Dan this morning, and this morning when they got up it was 18 degrees outside 67 inside. And they'd let the fire go out at ten the previous night.

I just got back from breakfast, and it was 43 degrees out on my deck, and 57 in my house.

Wonder who has the better-built, better-insulated home...

Almost finished the book, "The World Without Us". A good quote that I read this morning at breakfast:

"Humans are going extinct eventually. Everything has, so far. It's like death: there's no reason to think we're any different. But life will continue. It may be microbial life at first, Or centipedes running around. Then life will get better and go on, whether we're here or not. I figure it's interesting to be here now. I'm not going to get all upset about it."
